What Traveling to Bermuda for the First Time was Like:
Though we took the long journey from Portland, Oregon, we were actually quite surprised by how close Bermuda is within reach of the East Coast. Flying from New York City, you can arrive in Bermuda in just over 2 hours. Approaching the small set of islands, the emerald and turquoise waters crested with white and pink hues of pristine beach along Bermuda’s shores. For first-time visitors, these views capture the essence of paradise, one of the must-see things in Bermuda that leaves travelers speechless on arrival. Even in previously visiting the Caribbean and various Pacific islands, we’d never seen anything quite like this tiny oasis amongst the mid-Atlantic. I felt a rush of excitement as I finished my English breakfast tea and readied myself to land in paradise.
Flying into Bermuda, you first notice the expanse of white roofs dotting the green island surrounded by electric blue waters. The island is so well curated and controlled that it adds an almost fairytale-like quality. Then you see the Hamilton Princess in pink pastel, right on the bayfront. A stay at The Hamilton Princess represents one of the best things to do for travelers wanting to experience elegant culture and relaxation, with pastel facades and expansive gardens surrounding multiple pools on the grounds, adding to the charm. Those white roofs are a specific white paint that filters rainwater to then collect it underneath each dwelling, every building a gorgeous shade of pastel.
Some days take you by surprise. After a stressful study with nursing school and dentistry, we spent the weekend in Bermuda to catch up with each other and finally take a moment to relax. It was everything we needed right now... happy to bring you along! Thanks for watching.
Arriving at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess, we fell in love. First, the millennial pink façade spoke to me and gave me a sense of playfulness and sophistication. The service was incredible, and everyone was so happy to welcome us to the island and seemed to truly enjoy sharing their slice of paradise. Travelers looking for luxury combined with warmth will always find the best places to go in Bermuda begin here, where fantastic views are accessible at any given part of the day! We were perfectly greeted when we arrived at our room with a signature cocktail, the Dark and Stormy, a cocktail served on the rocks in a highball glass with dark rum and ginger beer, and garnished with a fresh slice of lime.
The Fairmont Gold Lounge was the cherry on top of an already incredible experience. The Fairmont Gold staff made the effort to get to know us, welcome us by name, and help us find the best activities to do and sights to see. Not only was it an added luxury, but it was also a great way to increase the value of our stay. We hit each event, from breakfast to afternoon tea, hors d’oeuvres to late-night dessert. Visitors who want insider recommendations on things to do in Bermuda will find the Gold Lounge a gateway to some lush comforts as well as memorable insights to what to see on the island. As many know, the prices to eat out in Bermuda can climb quite quickly. Having the option to enjoy a light lunch of small appetizers and snacks in the Fairmont Gold lounge within the comfort of the resort is the highest perk we could possibly ask for.
What do travelers to Bermuda usually seek more than a peaceful day spent on the beach? The long southern stretch of the island provides ample beach for locals and visitors alike to enjoy without being overly crowded. It was especially enjoyable to have a private beach club hosted by the Hamilton Princess, Sinky Bay. Taking a free shuttle from the hotel, we were transported to an island cove with pink sand, colorful fish, and even some hammocks in the water to relax in. Having private access here shows why guides highlight a beach day at Sinky Bay as one of the most exclusive and relaxing things to do in Bermuda, with beachside cocktail service, access to sea-kayaks, and ocean-hammocks. For food and drink, there was a bar at the edge of the beach that provided chair-side service where your orders would be brought to you at a moment’s notice.
As we settled into our first beach day, we started to understand the true meaning of paradise as defined by Bermuda. The bay is protected by a rock barrier from rougher surf, so the beach of Sinky Bay is incredibly calm and peaceful. There are plenty of beautiful fish to spot around the rocks, so we really enjoyed soaking up the sun at this famous beach and lounge location. We paddle-boarded, snorkeled, and even kayaked around the bay before departing back to our hotel. The ability to sit on the beach through perfect weather, it’s a reminder that the best times to visit Bermuda often come down to pairing the island’s postcard scenery with easy access to outdoor experiences. Spring is widely considered one of the best times to visit Bermuda, since the weather is warm but not too hot, and there’s less humidity and fewer crowds than in the summer.
Honestly, we never really considered making the trip out to Bermuda, but we are so glad we made the spontaneous decision to go. The archipelago has more to offer than we could’ve ever imagined. I just can’t believe it’s taken us this long to get to this gem in the Atlantic. Bermuda is unexpected, underrated, and extraordinary. After exploring so much, we realized that what to do in Bermuda isn’t only about beaches, it’s about culture, people, and timeless charm.
Once we had spent only 24 hours there, Bermuda already had our hearts! We were amazed at the crystal blue water and pink sand beaches scattered all over the island. We loved learning about the island's architecture, culture, and history. How interesting to be in such a tropical place with a tradition of afternoon tea and pictures of Queen Elizabeth everywhere. From the culture, the colors, and the architecture around the island there’s so much to see in Bermuda that continues to surprise even seasoned travelers. We only wish we had more time to take it all in, but of course, we cannot wait to get back to Bermuda one day and again cheers with a Dark and Stormy in hand.
If Maui isn’t already on your bucket list, you need to bump it to the top. After (finally) exploring for myself, I can confidently say this island is so much more than pretty beaches and postcard-worthy palm trees. There are all kinds of variety and culture of Maui, Hawaii Island.
